During Empirical's early experimentation phase, while fine-tuning still designs and conducting numerous botanical tests, a team member returned from lunch with a sandwich and a bag of Doritos. On a whim, the Doritos were tossed into the still. Expectations were modest, perhaps hoping for some subtle top notes or merely the essence of the tortilla flavor.
To everyone's surprise, as the R&D team sampled the concoction, laughter ensued. They were tasting Doritos!
